9 Budget Friendly Southeast Asian Cities: Find Out What They’re worth!

1.Koh Samui, Thailand

Ko Samui Thailand

Ko Samui Thailand

Koh Samui is the place to go for beach lovers and snorkelling enthusiasts who are travelling through Thailand. This island is home to a variety of luxurious resorts and pristine beaches. The popularity of beaches like Lamai and Chaweng can be attributed to the fact that the surrounding resorts have undergone significant development and now provide first-rate amenities. In addition to the many water-based activities, tourists can also visit the Ang Thong Marine National Park, the Na Muang waterfalls, and the Big Buddha Shrine while they are in the area. Because of its widespread appeal and convenient accessibility, a tropical island is an ideal destination for first-time visitors to Thailand.

2.Angkor Wat, Cambodia

Angkor Wat Krong Siem Reap Cambodia

Angkor Wat Krong Siem Reap Cambodia

Siem Reap, a city in northwest Cambodia, is widely recognized as the entry point to the Angkor region, but it also boasts many attractions of its own. The city has a distinct character thanks to its blend of Chinese and colonial influences; here, city dwellers, rural folks, vintage motorcycles, and modern nightclubs coexist.

The War Museum in Siem Reap details Cambodia’s participation in numerous wars. At the same time, the Cambodia Landmine Museum and Relief Center educate visitors about the effects of landmines in Cambodia and the rest of Asia. Psah Chas, one of the city’s many enormous markets, sells a wide selection of fresh produce, local specialities, and other items to both locals and visitors.

Less than six kilometres north of Siem Reap stands Angkor Wat, the largest religious monument and one of the top World Heritage Sites. This massive temple complex dates back to the 12th century, and its sandstone block ruins span over 162 acres. Angkor Thom, Ta Prohm, and Pre Rup aren’t the only Khmer-style temples nearby.

3.Boracay, Philippines

Boracay Malay Philippines

Boracay Malay Philippines

Boracay is a small island that can be found directly across the water from Panay Island, which is one of the largest islands in the Philippines. Boracay receives tens of thousands of tourists annually, even though it is only ten square kilometres in size. These tourists are drawn to the island’s four-kilometre-long beach, which features powdery white sands that wash right into the turquoise waters and sailboats that rock and roll on the waves. This beach is considered to be one of the best in the Philippines.

In addition to scuba diving and snorkelling, Boracay is famous for other water sports, such as parasailing, kiteboarding, and swimming. Cliff diving is another popular activity on the island, which may come as a surprise to some. On specific areas of the island, high-rise diving platforms from three to fifteen meters above the water have been installed. Lifeguards are stationed there to watch the divers as they soar through the air above the glistening water below.

4.Sa Pa, Vietnam

Fansipan Sa Pa Lao Cai Vietnam

Fansipan Sa Pa Lao Cai Vietnam

The remote village of Sa Pa can be found high in the Hoang Lien Son mountains in Northern Vietnam. Sa Pa is more reminiscent of the popular trekking destinations in South Asia than it is of the regional jungles and beaches. Aside from the breathtaking beauty of the highlands, the culture developed over time in the Lao Chai Province of Vietnam is unlike that of the rest of the country. This is because the province is home to several ethnic tribal groups that settled in the region generations ago and have since established their autonomous identities after decades of strife among Vietnamese independence fighters and French imperialists.

Fan Si Pan is the highest mountain in Vietnam at an elevation of 3,143 meters (10,311 feet) above mean sea level. It is currently the most popular tourist destination in Sa Pa. Hoang Lien National Park, on the other hand, provides hikers with a picturesque mountain landscape that is dotted with valleys of terraced rice paddies, in addition to a unique forest ecosystem that is home to several endangered species and small tribal villages.

5.Langkawi, Malaysia

Langkawi Malaysia

Langkawi Malaysia

Paddy fields, expansive parks, and hills covered in the jungle can be found on the Malaysian island of Langkawi, encircled by brilliant turquoise waters. It is famous for its undiscovered beaches, including Datai Bay, Pantai Cenang, and Tanjung Rhu. Cable car rides in Patai Kok and visits to the Underwater World in Langkawi are two more activities visitors can partake in while they are in Langkawi.

Dive at the Pulau Payar Marine Park if you’re an adrenaline junkie who wants another way to satisfy your cravings for the rush that comes with the sport. In addition, tourists can go to the impressive Art in Paradise 3D Museum, which houses more than two hundred works of art that, when captured in a photograph, appear to have a striking resemblance to real life. One of the lesser-known facts about Langkawi is that it is one of the three duty-free islands in Malaysia. This means that shopaholics can indulge in retail therapy without feeling guilty about their purchases.

6.Yangon, Myanmar

Sule Pagoda Road Yangon Myanmar Burma

Sule Pagoda Road Yangon Myanmar Burma

Because of the five-decade-long military dictatorship that commanded the country, tourists were only allowed limited access to Myanmar until 2011. Therefore, now that it is finally possible to visit, and before it becomes crazy busy with tourists, you should see one of the fascinating destinations from budget-friendly Southeast Asia Cities.

Before 2006, the military government of Myanmar (also known as Burma) chose to relocate the nation’s capital from Yangon to another location. Because of the long period that a military dictatorship ruled the country, the city endured many hardships and still has a significant number of buildings that are falling apart and inadequate infrastructure.

In spite of this, Yangon is packed with stunning examples of architecture in the form of buildings dating back to the colonial era and centred around the 2,600-year-old Sule Pagoda. The gilded Shwedagon Pagoda, also known as the Golden Pagoda, is the most sacred Buddhist pagoda in the country and is believed to contain relics of the last four Buddhas. This pagoda dominates the city’s skyline and is known as the Golden Pagoda.

It is highly recommended that tourists spend some time perusing the stalls at the Bogyoke Aung San Market. Visitors can purchase anything from antiques and regional handicrafts to Burmese jade, regional specialities, and even natural medicine products. The Yangon Circular Train is another fantastic attraction that should not be missed. It travels in a loop that is 46 kilometres long around Yangon and provides a one-of-a-kind look into the real lives of Burmese people.

7.Chiang Mai, Thailand

Doi Inthanon Chiang Mai Thailand

Doi Inthanon Chiang Mai Thailand

Chiang Mai is included on this list because it is likely still the top destination for finding truly affordable accommodations. However, the cost of living in Thailand is significantly higher than in Vietnam and Cambodia. If you want to maintain a similar standard of living in Thailand as you would in Vietnam or Cambodia, you must make significant adjustments to your spending habits.

Within the next few days, we will publish our city guide to Chiang Mai, and although we have a variety of opinions regarding the location, we can tell you that overall, we are torn about it. The digital nomad community, in our opinion, is overrated; however, we find the city to be pleasant if a little monotonous. You can find accommodation from $120 a month in Chiang Mai and of a decent standard.

8.Bali, Indonesia

Nusa Penida Klungkung Regency Bali Indonesia

Nusa Penida Klungkung Regency Bali Indonesia

It should come as no surprise that the other major centre of activity for digital nomads in Southeast Asia is included on the list. The fact that a location is both inexpensive and agreeable enough to attract nomadic people is the primary factor in determining whether or not it will become a nomad hub.

We have not yet had the opportunity to spend any time in Indonesia. That being the case, we don’t have any personal experience with the location to draw from. On the other hand, we have many friends who have been to Bali and have nothing but good things to say about the island.

Because Hindi is the predominant culture, people there are generally more accepting of Western ways of behaving than in the rest of the country. In Bali, one can rent a place for as little as $150 per month; however, if we were going to stay there, we would want to pay a little bit more for somewhere that was in a better location and had more amenities.

9.Luang Prabang, Laos

Luang Prabang Laos

Luang Prabang Laos

This northern city in Laos is surrounded by several villages that together form the UNESCO Town Of Luang Prabang World Heritage Site. Recognized for its mix of rural, French colonial, and religious architecture and heritage, the city, is one of Laos’s most visited and most beautiful.

Luang Prabang sits at the confluence of the Mekong and Nam Khan rivers and is home to many temples-including Wat Chom Si shrine, located at the top of Mount Phou Si and overlooking the town. Alms ceremonies (where monks take to the streets to ask for food) are so common here that the entire town is covered in streams of orange as the monks make their way through the streets in the early morning.

Just outside the city, the Bear Rescue Centre (which specializes in helping sun bears rescued from poachers) and the multi-tiered Kuang Si Falls are both worth a visit. If you’re up for some trekking, head out to the Pak Ou Caves, famous for their hundreds of miniature Buddha sculptures.
